A 100% renewable NSW is within our reach. The Greens have a plan to make it happen.
By rapidly phasing out fossil fuel electricity generation and investing in wind power, solar technologies and energy efficiency, NSW can reap the benefits of a being a world leader in the clean energy economy.
A 100% renewable NSW is not a pipedream. It’s possible, affordable and essential.
Possible:
The technology is ready – Generating electricity from solar thermal power plants, wind power, rooftop solar panels and other clean energy sources can provide a reliable and sustainable source of energy for NSW. Together with the expansion of energy efficiency measures, these technologies can power NSW.
The time is right – With spectacular decreases in the cost of wind and solar technologies and the first impacts of climate change taking hold, now is the time to begin a rapid phase out of fossil fuels.
Affordable:
Investment is available – The Federal Government has $5 billion earmarked for renewable energy development as part of Clean Energy Future package. Over $11 billion of investment in the wind industry in NSW is currently on the table waiting for the green light from the O’Farrell government.
It makes economic sense – Building and operating a new coal or conventional gas-fired power station is now more expensive than investing in renewable energy alternatives.
It will create thousands of new jobs– A 100% renewable energy economy wouldcreate up to 73,800 jobs in NSW, with many more in the export sector.
Essential:
NSW is the biggest carbon emitter in Australia – With some of the most polluting power stations in the world, NSW can’t afford to be left behind in the global race to transition to clean energy sources.
Fossil fuels are an energy dead end – Coal and coal seam gas offer no long term energy future for the NSW. Investing in technologies like coal seam gas and coal mining destroys farmland, local environments and the health of local communities.
Environmental, health and economic costs of fossil fuels are too high – With the worst impacts of rising carbon emissions rapidly approaching, the time to transform NSW’s energy sector is now.
Help us create a 100% renewable NSW!
As part of the 10 point plan to make 100% renewable NSW a reality, the Greens have introduced a bill into the NSW Parliament that would increase NSW’s renewable energy generation and see all coal fired power stations decommissioned by 2030. Check out the details here.
Now is the time for the O’Farrell government to drop their hostility to renewable energy and work with industry and community groups to make this vision a reality.
